In every society some babies are born to mothers who are unable to care for them. And in every society, some couples or individuals choose to create or extend their families through adoption rather than conception. In the Philippines many of these babies are cared for by their extended families. Those less fortunate will probably be placed in an orphanage - and they are likely to stay there until their mid to late teens. Many others are adopted by foreign families and leave the Philippines to live out their lives in any of many countries. The goal of Sister Families is to help couples or individuals in the Philippines adopt these babies. Not only does this matching provide the baby with the security and love it needs, but it also provides the parents an opportunity to love and care for a magnificent baby, and to help it grow and become a wonderful and productive adult. The Adoption Social Worker works privately with the adoptive parents and guides them through home studies and government applications, matching procedures, and placement. When Philippine legal requirements with respect to abandonment or relinquishment proceedings have been completed, the new parents then invite the child into their home, and proceed to legally adopt their newest family member. Sister Families is not involved in any way with international adoptions. Our only interest is to help domestic Philippine families or individuals create a permanent relationship based on love and care for these abandoned or relinquished infants. Our demonstration project is in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, where 70 babies have been placed in permanency with new parents over a four year period. While all are proceeding towards adoption, most have have now completed adoption proceedings. In Bacolod City the adoptive parents formed a support organization...Heaven Sent Society...and they meet approximately monthly to share ideas and experiences. The demonstration project was completed in late February, 2009, and now continues as a supportive partnership between the Adoption Social Worker, Holy Infant Nursery, Heaven Sent, and Sister Families. Sister Families has also initiated a program in Metro Manila, in partnership with Norfil Foundation. Norfil is one of the largest independent social service agencies in the Philippines, and we are delighted to be able to be working with them. Ten babies have entered the adoption process as they permanently join their new families. |
